Shocking Side Effect of Hair Loss Medication: Werewolf Syndrome in Babies

Writer's picture: David SantiagoDavid Santiago

Hair loss is an ever increasing concern among adults, leading many to seek solutions like minoxidil to combat it. However, minoxidil may have unintended side effects for the youngest members of the household: babies developing werewolf syndrome. This surprising outcome should raise red flags for parents using minoxidil, especially if proper precautions aren’t taken.

What Is Werewolf Syndrome?

Werewolf syndrome, medically known as hypertrichosis, is a rare condition characterized by excessive hair growth all over the body. Recent cases have been linked to indirect exposure to minoxidil treatments for hair loss.

How Are Babies Being Exposed?

The Pharmacovigilance Center of Navarre in Spain recently discovered at least 11 cases where babies developed hypertrichosis after being cared for by individuals using minoxidil. Caregivers applied the medication to their scalps and, without properly washing their hands, handled the babies. Over time, the babies began growing excessive hair on their bodies.

While this condition may sound alarming, the symptoms appear to be reversible. In all reported cases, the excessive hair growth subsided once the babies were no longer exposed to the medication. However, experts warn that prolonged exposure could lead to more severe complications, including heart and kidney damage in young children.

The Case That Sparked the Investigation

In April 2023, an infant in Spain began experiencing hair growth on his legs, thighs, and back over two months. Researchers determined the cause: his father had been using a 5% minoxidil solution and inadvertently exposed the baby during routine care. Once the father stopped using the medication, the baby’s hair growth reversed.

Further investigations uncovered 10 similar cases across Europe. These findings raise concerns about how widespread the issue might be, particularly in countries like the U.S., where minoxidil is sold over the counter.

What Parents Need to Know

Minoxidil is an FDA-approved medication for treating hair loss and is widely available without a prescription. While it’s effective for adults, these findings serve as a vital reminder for parents to exercise caution when using medications around young children.

If you’re using minoxidil and have an infant at home, follow these precautions:

- Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the medication.

- Avoid close physical contact with your child immediately after application.

- Store the product securely and out of reach of children.
